Prince Jackson Says Any “Michael” Sequel Must Match the Original’s “Same Degree of Care”

Prince Jackson says the family isn’t in a rush to greenlight a sequel to “Michael,” even as talks about one continue behind the scenes. The 29-year-old, who served as an executive producer on the billion-dollar biopic about his father, addressed the question directly in an interview with Extra, conducted at the historic Hayvenhurst estate during the “King of Popcorn” charity gala benefiting the Heal Los Angeles Foundation.

What Prince Said

Asked about the possibility of a follow-up film, Prince didn’t rule it out, but he was clear about the condition attached to it. “If we move forward with a sequel, it needs to receive the exact same level of love, care, and respect,” he told Extra, addressing ongoing speculation about where the Jackson story might go next on screen.

The interview took place at Hayvenhurst, the Encino, California estate that served as the Jackson family home for decades and holds particular significance for Prince: he and his cousin Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael in the film, spent parts of their childhoods there together before eventually collaborating on the biopic as adults. Prince and his younger brother Bigi Jackson co-hosted the event, which supports Heal LA, the youth-focused nonprofit Prince co-founded.

Why The Film Matters To The Conversation

“Michael” has become the highest-grossing biopic in box office history since its April release, and the film crossed $1 billion at the global box office, becoming the first biographical film ever to reach that milestone. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson in his feature debut, the film covers Michael Jackson’s rise from the Jackson 5 through his solo breakthrough with “Off the Wall” and into the “Bad” era. Its commercial success is the backdrop against which sequel talks are happening, a follow-up would have a high bar to clear, both financially and in terms of the family’s involvement.

No Timeline Yet

Prince’s comments suggest discussions about a second film are real but still early. He didn’t offer a timeline, a director, or details on which period of his father’s life a sequel might cover, and no studio has announced a follow-up project. His remarks read less as an announcement than as a boundary he wants respected if and when those conversations move forward, a message aimed at ensuring any future project meets the same standard of care the family says went into the first one.

The Family’s Role Behind The Scenes

Prince’s position as executive producer gave him and other family members involvement in shaping how his father was portrayed in “Michael,” and his comments to Extra suggest that same level of oversight would be a condition of any sequel getting made. The family’s investment in getting the story right has been a recurring theme throughout the film’s rollout, including in earlier interviews where Prince described the emotional weight of watching Jaafar portray his father on screen.

Neither Lionsgate, which released “Michael,” nor any other studio has confirmed plans for a sequel. For now, the closest thing to an official update is Prince’s own account: talks are happening, but nothing is being rushed.
