Michael Jackson Estate’s 2024 Accounting: About $20 Million in Benefits for Family

The Michael Jackson Estate’s latest court accounting shows roughly $20 million in benefits went to his mother and three children in 2024. The report, filed by co-executor John Branca and obtained by TMZ, was covered by several outlets in early October.

What the Accounting Shows

According to TMZ’s reporting of the filing, Paris Jackson received about $6.3 million in benefits in 2024, covering items such as tax bills and legal fees, along with roughly $309,000 for repairs and maintenance on her main home. Prince Jackson received about $6.4 million, including a $4.9 million tax bill. The estate spent about $3.1 million on Bigi Jackson, with costs including homeowners’ association fees, 2023 taxes and a toll-lane bill. Katherine Jackson received more than $4 million, including legal fees and event-related costs.

Taken together, that comes to about $20 million. The word “benefits” in the filing covers more than cash payments, since much of it consists of taxes and expenses paid on beneficiaries’ behalf. The estate is also seeking court approval to pay more than $9 million to its attorneys and other professionals for work over six years, according to Yahoo Style’s coverage.

How the Estate Is Divided

Under MJ’s will, 40 percent goes to his mother until her death, 40 percent to his three children, and 20 percent to charity. When Katherine Jackson dies, her share passes to the children, according to Hello magazine. The accounting reflects those arrangements, though it doesn’t summarize overall distributions since 2009.

Questions About Value

The coverage I found doesn’t include an estate valuation drawn from the accounting. Outside outlets have cited figures ranging from roughly $1 billion to $2 billion, but those are estimates, not numbers from the filing. An estate attorney, Jonathan Steinsapir, has said in a statement quoted by Hello that the executors’ business decisions have earned the estate “over $3 billion,” though that describes earnings rather than present value. MJ’s estate was reported to be around $500 million in debt when he died in 2009.

The Business Ventures

The estate’s projects include “MJ The Michael Jackson Musical,” which is touring Asia in 2027, and Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson ONE” at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Cirque announced in 2024 that the Las Vegas show would continue through November 2030. The coverage of the accounting doesn’t say how much these projects contributed to the estate’s income, so it isn’t clear how large their role was in 2024.

Ongoing Disputes

The filing arrives amid continuing tension between the executors and Paris Jackson. Earlier this year, a court referee ruled in her favor on $625,000 in disputed 2018 attorney bonuses, and the estate has since objected to her $1.16 million fee request. The separate request for court approval of professional fees in this accounting is another point where the estate’s spending is under scrutiny.

Why It Matters

For fans, the accounting is one of the few public windows into how MJ’s estate operates, showing where money goes and how the family benefits. The picture is more complicated than a simple payout story: much of the spending covers taxes, legal costs and upkeep, and the estate’s total value remains a matter of estimate. Any full assessment would need the filing itself, which this article has not reviewed.
